what is the artist’s homebase program?

There are five components to the program, aimed to create consistency and structure for mid-career and established artists working as an unrepresented visual arts professional. The program is also open to emerging artists who have a dedicated art practice and would like to progress their arts career.

The five main components of the program are:

  1. yearly exhibitions

  2. teaching workshops & consulting space

  3. creative learning & meets

  4. professional collective platforms

  5. discounts on art supplies, eco-products and licencing production

This is a wonderful opportunity for a group of like-minded artists to make the beautiful ‘CnG Art Gallery’ their home gallery for three consecutive years. As an artist, you will feel supported in further developing, fine-tuning, or the setting-up of your art practice with a professional outlook. You will have a gallery shopfront to call home for the next three years creating certainty in your plan for long-term growth in your artistic discipline.

Please feel free to contact me with any queries, I look forward to discuss if this program is right for you. I have expanded on each of these components in further detail below, so you can see how this program will suit your needs.

questions

How many artists will be in the program?

I am looking for 25 - 40 artists to sign up for the program. The number of artists depends on if each invests in a one-week or two-week exhibition option. There will likely be some more artists involved with the gallery, as many will opt for the ‘elemental’ program.

how is the program organised?

I will still manage the gallery in terms of organisation of the exhibitions, booking of workshop space, complementary learning programs, and of course manage the accounts and stand as the lease-holder.

Will I definately be accepted if i apply?

No, I will also make the decision for the artists’ accepted into the program. Firstly, I will review artist statements, CVs and folios. Secondly, I will invite you to meet with me at the gallery - either individually or as a group. Thirdly, I will assess how all the applications sit together to ensure we have the right mix of artists at similar stages in development of their career, medium & genre.

will you be representing me as a gallery director?

We will be working together, yet you will need to run the show for your own career and sales channels. I will need to step back in the first couple of years from a representative role, to focus on my own visual arts career and my family. The financial commitments below will not pay my salary, so I will be using the gallery as my office for personal work and business activities. I am however continuing to be present in the gallery with the same passion I have offered artists in the previous two years and will be happy to meet with you to let you know all the options available to make your successes in this space.

Do you provide any guidance?

Definately! I will provide full marketing plans that I have set up for exhibitions at the gallery, along with template documents and contacts for promotional channels. I will update the website and send emails to the mailing list for you, and handle bookings with industry magazines, online ticketing systems, and more. You will have the full package provided to you - just put in the time to set yourself up, and learn to manage your art career along the way.

What about weekend opening hours?

The artist currently exhibiting will be responsible for opening the gallery on the weekend of their exhibition. Other options may be available, should the artist wish to pay for a gallery assistant over their weekend. The main purpose of the artist sitting in the gallery for the weekend is for them to meet with collectors and potential clients, and to be available to talk for their art practice. Artists will be thrilled to see how audiences receive their artworks, and gain great insight from gallery visitors.

Is the ‘homebase program’ funded?

No, this is the first iteration of the CnG Art Gallery ‘Homebase Program’. Aritsts will need to pay to be part of the program and gain the benefits of having their own gallery to call home. I am investing in my own career by being the first artist to sign up for the program, and I am hoping to find the full quota so we can embark on this journey together.

artist financial commitment

As a Homebase Artist, you will need to sign up to the full three-year program.

The purpose for the gallery to have homebase artists’ is to ensure viability to cover the base running expenses of the gallery, and therefore with a three year lease option the program needs commited artists to run through this lease term.

Payment options have been set up to suit each artists’ personal budget:

  • yearly,

  • monthly,

  • fortnightly, or

  • weekly

with a staggered pricing plan that favours less frequent transactions. The higher rate for weekly as opposed to yearly payments is purely due to the need for increased manual paperwork and accounting by the gallery manager.

If the program is suitable to you, at your current career stage then I am sure you will find the financial commitment suitable considering your yearly income and professional expenses. For example, consider how much you spend as an arts professional on the components available to you in this program:

  • yearly exhibition gallery hire, plus additional costs for promotions, sales and events

  • space hire for running workshops

  • tickets / term fees for classes you attend, and professional development / business tutorials, etc

  • website landing with artist bio, statement and artworks

  • art supplies at full price

  • networking groups to meet with like-minded professional artists

You will find that the price-points here allow for consolidation of expenses, less searching for suitable locations, and an all-in-one package at your favourite gallery in Bayside’s south-east. The best bit is everyone will always know where to find you!

Please peruse the financial options available, and find the one that suits you best:

why?

Your reason to join the ‘Homebase Program’…

will be the next natural step in your creative venture, a commitment to yourself and your practice to make the most of a wonderful opportunity over a three year period.

I am creating this ‘Homebase Program’…

as this is something that I would like as an artist, curator and visual arts professional.

My last musings…

Personally I would love to have this space as my own art gallery, yet I would also like to work on my own studio practice rather than run the gallery full time. I have decided to share the gallery space with like-minded practicing artists. I have set the opportunities and financial committments at levels that suit me as an artist, with the understanding that this will also suit the needs of many artists in the local area.

I will organise and manage the business elements of the gallery, yet step back from the ‘gallery director’ role. I aim to empower exhibiting artists to have more ownership and learning opportunities to use the space to their best advantage, being a part of a richly cultured space with collaborative creative opportunities. What I would like to share with you after two years running the ‘CnG Art Gallery’:

  • Beautiful gallery with retail shopfront, in the gorgeous community ‘shopping village’ of Martin Street Brighton

  • Perfect location, only 1 minute walk to Gardenvale train station, Sandringham line

  • Year-round gallery services, a place to call your own

  • Yearly exhibition with opening night event, includes organic refreshments and light catering

  • Template documents for pricelists, catalogues, CVs, artist statements, etc

  • Template documents for gallery branded advertising, with optional gallery design services

  • Advertising in reputable art publications: print, online

  • Marketing services via gallery channels: website, e-mailing list, flyers, social promotions and more

  • Gallery attendance: Monday - Friday by Caelene, or gallery assistant

  • Sales assistance prior to, during, and after the exhibition

  • Gallery commission kept low at only 30%

  • Artist represented on website: bio, folio of works, artist statement and more

  • Booking system for use of gallery floorspace to run workshops and talks

  • Booking system for use of gallery consultation desk, or consulting seats

  • Discounts on art supplies, and collaboration opportunities

Artists are welcome to arrange a meeting with me at the gallery, to talk through ideas and their vision for art exhibitions.
