stocks vs stockroom | WHY INVESTING IN ART IS BETTER
by Caelene nee Glen
KEEPS THE ARTS THRIVING
Many of the national and international companies that your stocks are invested in, are contributing to keep the arts in business. Large corporate sponsorships and donations from philanthropists help keep the arts economy moving.
So how about getting right in there and supporting an artist yourself. While displaying art in your home or business, you are sharing their work with your friends, family and professional networks, increasing interest and spreading the word of their practice.
Remember, the more you encourage others to invest into the artists you collect, the quicker their career florishes, the more time they have to dedicate to perfecting new projects, and overall you become a stepping stone in increasing the value of your own investment.
FINANCIAL APPRECIATION
Over time, with the right choices and guidance to choose work by collectable artists, your artpieces and art collection increase in value. Every artwork purchased, every exhibition added to the artists’ CV, and every selection as a finalist or winner for an award, mark new achievements for an artist’s career. Once the artist starts to be collected into public museums you know you have invested in something that will move up the money ladder.
IT’S “MOST” ENJOYABLE
Yes, it is important to choose artwork that you love! You live with a new visual display, every time you view your collection you will be emoted - may it be peace, be energy, or be that something you cannot put words to… whatever you feel, it is that personal attracion to an artwork that will be the most rewarding part of investing in an art collection.
Your home, business, or corporate space will look amazing; and you can continue to look foward an ever expanding vision for your next purchase and installation.
The stories: of the artists, behind the artworks, and your own acquisition process will continue growing… it is these visual and lyrical stories that allow us to relate to each other through art.
A COMMON INVESTED INTEREST
Remember that when you purchase an artwork, there are also other collectors that own artworks by the same artist.
I often tell my clients that, those who purchase limited edition prints are jointly investing in the same piece of artwork. Each can see where the editions move on the art market, and get an estimate for the current valuation of your collection, considering that you keep your artwork in prime condition.
It is the same for similarly sized works by an artist, as well as artworks created at the same time in their career - for instance, a specific body of works for an exhibition or period of time highly focussed on a subject or topic.
The same as when a public museum acquires an artwork; when a substantial art collector introduces one of these works into their collection, the valuation can increase over time with their collection.
SOCIAL CONNECTIONS
Exhibition opening nights, art fairs and major international events offer a smorgasbord of creative social interactions with artists, gallerists and the colourful world of art enthusiasts.
For more introverted collectors, a gallery can be a quiet and contemplative environment where you are encouraged to slow down and fully immerse yourself in curated exhibition installations, learn about the artists intention by reading thoughtful didactics, and immerse yourself in philosophies, myths and historical stories associated with the artists’ purpose.
LEARNING
Personally, I have studied both Visual Art and Sciences; I often wonder why one is not more closely considered aligned with the other. Both require deep thought and have evolved from philosophical roots, they start with quiet observation of the world and universe around us, based in human experience and a search for answers to timeless questions of existence.
There are theoretical practices, and experimentation with materials, techniques, chemical reactions, and of course creative thought to better a process of trial and error.
The result may be beautiful or shocking, it may be mocked by societal contemporaries, only to be wondrously accepted and celebrated at a later time as cultural norms advance.
Artists delve deep into their topics, into their practice and in their quest to understand a human relationship with thought, vision, the environment, and our existence. There is so much to learn, yet the communication is subtly expressed in a visual language, sometimes not readily translatable and often the dialect changes for each viewer
